Potato Harvest Done.

Harvested Organic Potato Field on Wood Prairie Family Farm Getting ‘Chisel-Plowed’ Ahead of Planting Fall Grain Cover Crop.

Immediately after we harvest a field of its Organic Maine Certified Seed Potatoes, we work fast to get it planted right back to soil-protecting cover crops.  First, the piles of rocks left behind by our ‘Lockwood’ Potato Harvester are picked by our tractor-drawn ‘Lockwood’ Rock Picker.  After that, we deeply Chisel-Plow cross-ways to the Potato rows with a red 7-Tooth ‘International Harvester’ Chisel plow.

Here, Justin is pulling the IH Chisel with our green 1967 92-HP Oliver 1850 Diesel tractor. Years ago Caleb and Justin completely re-built this tractor from the tires up and it still runs like a top!  A heavy home-made drag is pulled behind the Chisel Plow.  This drag is made from 6-inch metal well casing crammed chock-full for extra weight with worn-out inch-thick ‘grader blades’ from one of the Bridgewater Town snowplows.  In most cases, after making just a single pass with the Chisel and drag, the ground is all set to be planted with our IH 510 Grain Drill.  While Justin prepares the field seen in this picture, Jim was out planting Fall grain on another Potato field that Justin had just finished chiseling.

And so, with Potato Harvest now behind us we have our Organic Seed Potatoes stored safely away and all inventories are now logged in.  In our online Webstore, we have now fully updated availability of all Organic Maine Certified Seed Potatoes in their respective package sizes.

With the moderate yields common in Maine this year thanks for our wet weather, NOW is the best time to order your Seed Potatoes. The very best

selection of the year is available for the picking right now!  There is no doubt we will sell out of some popular varieties earlier than normal this year.  So, this is the year to not tarry on ordering!

Organic Garlic Seed will ship out beginning next week.  Soon after that, we’ll begin shipping out early orders of Organic Seed Potatoes.  Remember, you can order now and we’ll be happy to hold your order and ship it whenever you want it during the Fall, Winter or Spring.

We hope your harvests are going great!  Thanks for all your kindness and wonderful support!

Megan's Kitchen Recipes:
     Tender Roasted Beets

Preheat oven to 400ºF.

Cut beets into wedges if large, or in half or quarters if small. Arrange in an ovenproof casserole dish. Dot the beets with 1 to 2 Tablespoons butter or drizzle with 1 to 2 Tablespoons olive oil. Cover the ovenproof dish with a cover or with foil if you don't have a cover. Bake at 400ºF for 50 to 60 minutes until tender.

I like to put my baking potatoes in the oven at the same time, as they cook at the same temperature and take the same amount of time.

Serve with salt and apple cider vinegar, or I like it with Ranch Salad Dressing as a dip.
